We start our day at Colemans Nursery Centre where we will have a short static display and tea or coffee. We then Drive to the Famine Centre in Swatragh, where we will be shown around by a knowledgeable guide. The centre was the home of Dr Mooney and His wife Sarah. Together they ran a surgery in the mid 1800s. During the Great Hunger - An Gorta Mor they established a private soup kitchen to aid the community. In collaboration with esteemed historians like Ciaran Reilly from Maynooth University and local experts the centre brings to life the Mooneys’ unwavering commitment during one of Irelands most challenging periods. Developed by Dermot Friel the centre was inspired by the discovery of an original famine pot in 1992 and a small window on the historic site during lockdown.
