Annual Dinner Dance - Friday 11th March 2011.
Our annual dinner dance will be held in Clarion Hotel, Carrickfergus on Friday 11th March 2011. Music will be supplied by the very enjoyable and popular band from this year’s event “THIS WAY UP”.

Please keep this date free and invite your friends and family to this most enjoyable function.

Event Managers Please note that you are required to have all details of your event available to go into print i.e. entry forms etc at least two months prior to your event, sorry folks but we are now too big for wing and a prayer type administration, we have to get entry forms out well in advance.

Reports from previous events and for photos please checkout our web site!

Treasure Hunt and Barbecue Run - 17th of July
Event Manager Norman Neill and family played an absolute blinder with this event from start to finish; everyone who was on it has nothing but praise for the way the Neill family made such a great day out. I can only say on behalf of the entire club thanks for such a super day! The combination of the route, the picnic site and a certain establish know as Billy Andy`s, where as I understand it the fun really started, really made the day. A vote of thanks also goes to Richard Hunter my old school mate who is the owner of Billy Andy`s and has agreed to let us return when we want, Richard by the way has a great Mk 1 Ford Escort RS 1600 which has been subject to a twenty year plus restoration, things take time in that part of the country! Anyway well done Norman who also sponsored the event and as such should get a plug for his company, in Glenoe he is known as Mr. Mover and specializes with his team in removals and storage, local, cross boarder and cross channel. So if you need something moved give Norman a bell on 07765 475825.

Belfast-Portrush Cavalcade Sunday 1st August
If you were going to pick a theme tune for the day the old Tina Turner anthem of “Simply the Best” for me would be the one!

It’s hard to know where to start with a report on this year’s event, everyone who either took part or witnessed it as a spectator had nothing but praise for it.

The big decision to move it from Saturday to Sunday has, when you look at it, worked better than we dared have hoped, in terms of a more relaxed drive to Portrush; yes we have to address the issue of getting in and out of both Portstewart and Portrush, which are bottle necks any day during the summer season. The positive aspects of marginal traffic in Glengormley, Antrim, Ballymena and Ballymoney worked well, as did being able to spread ourselves out with the one large function room in the Royal Court Hotel.

It was quite note able that appearing in clusters along the route were some well informed spectators with cameras etc in hand, more so than previous Saturday runs and as for both Portstewart and Portrush we literally bring both towns to a halt, with the majority of the public enjoying the view of the cars en-route.

The charity chosen at the AGM was the Mid Antrim Animal Sanctuary. The MAAS is a nonprofit independent registered charity and relies upon the kindness and generosity of the people in Northern Ireland. It is run by a small staff, aided by a dedicated team of volunteers. They operate a strict NO KILL policy so the kennels are always full. To date they have re-homed over 9000 pets. Thanks to EAOVC and the Belfast-Portrush Cavalcade they look set to benefit by in excess of £4,000, which is a superb result.

Again as per usual with EAOVC, the success of the run was down to a combined team effort, headed by Robert Raj on administration, Donald Davies as principal sponsor and “tail end Charlie” on the run, Brian Hamilton as lead car setting the pace and Martin Waterworth as chief marshall plus the rest of the Portrush committee.

Special thanks has to go to Maurice Walker who as both a club member and mechanic, doubled back to the Royal Court Hotel to assist a stranded driver who could not get his car going, I believe it was after midnight before Maurice and his wife made it home. I also hear that Donald Davies was evolved in this and another rescue mission again thanks Donald and all you do for the event. Also thanks to the AA patrol man who helped a couple of folk along the way, it’s good to have the AA along as part of the team. I have not added in all who helped as there are too many to mention, but simply to say thanks for a job well done.

As for the entrants and cars that are the stars of the event, it is marvelous to see folk coming all the way from as far afield as Blessington Co Wicklow and Portpatrick in Dumfries and Galloway. The Blessington club really made the weekend for our club by coming up on Saturday in time for a combined EAOVC and Blessington social event on Saturday evening. We within the EAOVC are looking forward to the return visit to Blessington next year to join in with one of their events.

The range and quality of cars on the run is superb , from pre war onwards, again it is impossible to single any out as there are too many great cars to talk about and this is again an item that makes this run what it is, one of the best that you will find anywhere in Ireland.

BALLOT BOOKS if you still have any, can you get them back to Robert –thanks.

Presidents’ Run - Sunday 22nd of August.
A short run from Chimney Corner to Grey Point Fort and back to Carrickfergus, why such a short run? The sun was out and when we reached Grey Point Fort out came the deck chairs and that was that! It’s not often we get such a good day and the decision to stop at the fort was the only one to take, which made for a lot of relaxed and tanned folk enjoying the day. Well done Brian – nice one with the weather!!

Grey Point Fort
In my view this is probably the best maintained gun emplacement in all of Northern Ireland.

The fort consists of a number of buildings including Ammunition Magazine, Gun Batteries, Shelters, Observation Post, Fire Command, Radar Platform and 3 searchlight emplacements.

During the Second World War the Fort was used to protect Belfast Lough and as part of this role when any ship entered Belfast Lough it was contacted by Coastal Defense Personnel and asked to identify itself. If there was no reply it was told "Heave to or be sunk" and if there was still no suitable response then a shell would have been fired across the ship’s bow as a final warning before opening fire with explosive shells.

I am told that our two ancient mariners; Richard and Derek remember this procedure well!

YOU’RE VECHILE ON THE WEBSITE
Is your vehicle and maybe your photograph and some write up about your vehicle on the website? It is time it was. Please send a photo of your vehicle and yourself with some details by email to: Andy.  Speaking of the website, if you take a look you can see what`s for sale, what’s going on and generally keep up to date faster than the newsletter. Also the member’s forum is the best way to express your point of view in between meetings. Again well done to Andrew Leckey for all the hard work that has gone into your website, which from now on will be the Clubs medium of choice for general communication etc.

FOR SALE
Has anyone got anything for sale? If so let me know and I will include it.

Editors Note.
If you take a look on the web site you will see a lot of hard work being put in by Andy plus my thanks also goes to those who have sent in photos of various events – more please.

Gavin.
